In countries like the United Kingdom, approximately 90% of white (and especially young) wines use the Screw Cap closure. This is also the case in New Zealand, South Africa and Chile, where screw caps have been used as closures for their wines for years. In fact, 92% of New Zealand wines are closed in this way, while in Chile and South Africa the figure is 53%. These countries have an established wine culture and excellent production in terms of quality.

We are convinced that the key lies in understanding that the screw cap is compatible with some types of wine and not with others.

A screw cap wine bottle can hold an excellent young or fruity, wine as well as any other feature that does not necessarily require ageing in the bottle and is consumed not long after purchase. In fact, screw caps have some aspects that are advantageous than other types of closures:

  • The aluminium screw cap prevents oxygen from entering the wine, preserving the fruity aroma of the drink
  • The aluminium closure is more versatile for certain designs
  • The screw cap is more comfortable and easier to open. It is therefore widely used in bars, where agility and consumption by the glass are the norm

In conclusion, experts say that the screw cap is useful for certain types of wines and for those that will be consumed in a short period of time. On the other hand, for wines that require maturation or ageing, the ideal is clearly microgranulated natural cork.

The development of the screw cap

Technology has evolved by leaps and bounds, and today a screw cap like the Torrent Roscap is perfectly adaptable for a high-quality wine.

Torrent Group has been manufacturing aluminium screw caps for wine for over 50 years. Our Pilfer/Steelcap line ensures that a wine remains in perfect condition from its release to the market until its consumption.

As screw cap manufacturers, we also see that the use of this type of closure as an alternative to cork for wine bottle closures is gaining more and more support in Spain, Portugal and other European Union countries, which until only recently were reluctant to close their wines with this type of closure solution.

At Torrent Closures, we understand just how much trust our customers place in us, and that is why our screw caps are renowned for the security they provide. In our commitment to our customers’ food safety, we have developed laser-printed numbers on the lids that are almost impossible for counterfeiters to copy, and invisible inks that prove the authenticity of the product. This means that our closures are really very difficult to counterfeit.
