“Torrent Group moves forwards with its innovation and sustainability projects, and expands its bulk polymer pellets storage capacity
With over a century of history to its name, Torrent Group, the world’s leading manufacturer of virgin olive oil (EVOO) stoppers and the world’s second manufacturer of liquors and spirits, continues to be immersed in new production and logistics projects, while also making headway in the area of sustainability. The Andalusian company reached in 2020 a production of 2,250 million units in closures solutions for EVOO, liquors and spirits.
To meet the challenges of this new decade, TORRENT GROUP has developed a series of Eco-responsible initiatives, with different work objectives, which include product design, logistics, sourcing and certification of our raw materials, the energy we use and the health of our employees. “The energy we buy at TORRENT, for example, is mostly green energy from renewable sources”, states Plastic and Rubber magazine from the company.
In this sense, TORRENT GROUP is immersed in a process of continuous innovation and aims to take another step forward in the non-refillable closures for drinks sector. “Some projects undertaken in 2020 have been delayed as a result of the pandemic”, explain company sources, adding: “Investment has continued from last year to the present”.
Currently, the Andalusian company has maintained the start-up of investments in innovation and process evolution, with food safety a priority and aimed at increasingly sustainable production. “New closure models, digital transformation, greater production capacity, expansion of warehouses, increased facilities, installation of solar panels to obtain photovoltaic energy in production plants in Spain: these are some of our most important projects undertaken in 2021”, they point out.
In this regard, in September, Torrent expanded its storage capacity for bulk polymer pellets by installing three new silos in at the NON-REFILLABLE STOPPER COMPANY (CTISA), its El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) factory, marking another step towards sustainable production. There is a now a total of nine silos supporting this production. “The expansion of storage capacity by 180 tons will allow us new management resources when planning strategies for primary materials shortages, which we are currently experiencing,” the company confirms.
The factory in El Puerto de Santa María manufactures non-refillable plastic stoppers for EVOO, liqueurs and spirits, as well as producing all the plastic components required for aluminium and cork closures. In addition to the production of non-refillable plastic stoppers, the El Puerto de Santa María stopper factory is also the home of the company’s R + D + i and Innovation, Engineering, Injection Moulding and Administration Departments.
The investment in TORRENT GROUP R + D + i has contributed to its growth, competitiveness and solvency, enabling the company to operate throughout the world. Over the last decade, its international expansion has been remarkable: factories have been opened in India and Africa, and new distributors found in Mexico, Russia and Colombia, in addition to the existing 25. “The India factory, located in Jaipur, uses the most modern technology in the plastic stopper for liqueurs sector,” state sources within the company, adding “This is a distinctive factor which translates into high levels of competitiveness.”
Regarding its operations in Africa, in 2017, Torrent Group strengthened its presence in the world closure solutions market with the start-up of a new production plant in Nairobi (Kenya).. The 8,850m2 factory enables our group to get closer to customers in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and therefore improve production through the reduction of costs in manufacturing and shipping charges.
Currently, TORRENT staff in Spain includes 400 employees at four production plants, whilst in India and Kenya the company has 250 and 27 employees respectively.”
